The promise of art keeps vandals away
June 16th, 2007 by Martin
Take a good close look at this picture and tell me what’s wrong. Any suggestions? Well, what if I told you that this plywood wall is located in the centre of otherwise graffiti infested Copenhagen and that it’s been clean like this for at least a month now.Notice the white sheet of paper to the left. What magic powers does it hold? Does it say something about a big fat fine? A polite request?
What is does say is this: “Do not write anything here. The billboard will be used for an artistic project.”
I’m still waiting for that ‘artistic project’ …
Art says: Behave!
This is not the first time I’ve seen art as a regulatory force that makes people behave. Furniture company
A clever wo/man from the company came up with this idea: “We’ll have the sale at an art opening.” So they did and the presence of art calmed the bargain-hungering attendees. Even though it was an opening with ‘art savage’
Hornsleth (Danish, sorry). An obvious question comes to mind: Why are most modern art museums often as boring as churches? Are museums where modern art goes to die? This
place promises to do things differently. My fingers crossed.
