Opening tonite: Classy art bar in CPH’s meat district

November 15th, 2007 by Martin

It’s not every day you want to blog about a new bar opening, in fact this is a first for me. Karierre Bar (En: ‘Career Bar’) is a new artist-initiated, -curated, and in part -driven place in the old meat district (‘Kødbyen’) in Copenhagen. Considering the municipal aim to revitalize this old industrial complex, this opening is a strike of genius.

Behind the project is artist Jeppe Hein, who is awesome enough in himself, but what really gets me exited is the list of artists contributing with permanent works in the actual bar space:

  • Franz Ackermann
  • Kristoffer Akselbo
  • AVPD
  • Kenneth Balfelt
  • Bank & Rau
  • Massimo Bartolini
  • Monica Bonvicini
  • Janet Cardiff /George Bures Miller
  • Maurizio Cattelan
  • Gardar Eide Einarsson
  • Olafur Eliasson
  • Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset
  • Ceal Floyer
  • FOS
  • Alicia Framis
  • Dan Graham
  • Tue Greenfort
  • Douglas Gordon
  • Carl Michael von Hausswolff
  • Jeppe Hein
  • Carsten Höller
  • Jesper Just
  • Ernesto Neto
  • Dan Peterman
  • Tino Sehgal
  • Tomas Saraceno
  • Claude El Skorrari
  • Robert Stadler
  • Simon Starling
  • Ririkrit Tiravanija
  • Johannes Wohnseifer
Now, we all know that the average art opening is just barely saved by the free (often lousy) wine. This would hardly be the case with Karierre Bar (I mean, just consider international capacities such as as Cattelan, Elmgreen/Dragset, Eliasson, and Tiravanija combined with some of Denmark’s freshest, FOS, Balfelt and Hein himself). But even so I welcome the upside-down approach on art and alcohol: Installing the artworks in an actual bar.

And, of course, it makes sense from an art political perspective too; exiting the white cube reserve and going where real people are (I’m hoping/assuming real people will come to this place and that it’s not just another anemic gallery in disguise).

I, for one, will do my best to work on my ‘career’ here, while spending my whiskey allowance at the same time.
